ORIGINAL: On this weekend’s episode of Ring of Honor TV, ROH confirmed that Jay Briscoe will defend the ROH Title against his brother, Mark Briscoe, at the Best in the World PPV. ROH has also confirmed that the following three men have title shots waiting for them…

* Matt Hardy: Due to SCUM’s victory at Border Wars, Steve Corino was also allowed to choose a future #1 contender for his team and chose Hardy.

* Michael Elgin: Earned his title shot with a victory over Jay Lethal at the Ring of Honor 11th Anniversary iPPV.

* Kevin Steen: Steen will reportedly get his rematch for the title, but ROH match maker Nigel McGuinness has placed Steen in a series of challenge matches to prove himself. Steen will have to defeat every single member of SCUM in one-on-one action to receive his title match.

Pat Buck, who is also one of the promoters, noted that he broke his nose and apologized for any blood and how he looked. He said that he doesn’t like when promoters put themselves over and he doesn’t wrestle a lot on his shows because of it. He then said they were very happy to be in NYC. He then announced that Doc and D’Lo Brown were advertised to be here but weren’t because they took another booking that was closer and didn’t want to make the drive. He buried D’Lo for treating him bad when he tried to get into WWE years ago and noted that he was proud of his students, some of whom he’s trained for nine months to get them ready for their debut.

– Scott Hudson was a guest on Inside the Ropes and compared Goldberg to Ryback. Here are highlights:

On Sting’s character changing into the Crow gimmick in 1996: “I thought it was brilliant. Sting for better or worse, is never going to be confused with Shawn Michaels or Kenta Kobashi or the great workers of the business. It’s not that Sting was a poor worker but he wasn’t gonna go out there and give you a 5 star match every time he laced up a pair of boots. But the thing that got him over was his charisma. You go back and look at those Sting promos, they weren’t that good either. They were passable promos, some didn’t make any sense but he had such a charisma that he got over. And Eric, to his everlasting credit, got the idea, he said “What can we do to get Sting over? He’s only getting so hot and then when we try to put him on top, the buyrates go down, the ratings go down, we need to do something to elevate him to where he can become the top guy” And Eric’s idea was, you know everyone likes Sting nobody doesn’t like Sting so Eric thought Sting can’t really work and isn’t that great at promos so how about if we have him not work and not say anything and then he’ll be really over. So that’s what they did. If you go back and look at that whole build up to Starrcade 97, it took him months to even say anything or point the black bat at somebody. And he was never more over than at that time when he didn’t say anything and he didn’t wrestle. That was the most popular he’s ever been.”

On comparisons between Goldberg and Ryback: “Eric Bischoff was smart enough to know the NWO weren’t gonna last forever so he started building up Goldberg who would go on to be the overarching storyline and I guess be the Hulk Hogan of 1985 in WCW in 1998. That was a terrific way to use him, but then by comparison, you look at Ryback right now in the WWE, who is so obviously a knock off of what we did with Goldberg and if he’s over at all, and I question whether or not he is, he’s nowhere near as over as Goldberg was. And it’s because we booked Goldberg correctly. He never lost, that was the whole gimmick and the minute he lost he lost that luster. Well Ryback has been beaten by, who knows, Santino Marella? Lilian Garcia? Who knows? He’s been beaten by everybody. You know, we let Goldberg be the monster and beat up everybody. They tried to make Ryback a monster and he gets beaten up. Nobody buys that. That gimmick only has a certain shelf life unless you build him as this incredible monster and we built Goldberg perfectly only to screw it up with that finger poke of doom and stuff.”

He also spoke about his time in WCW, feelings on Bret Hart in WCW, Russo’s booking, the sale of the company, his short stint in the WWF Invasion storyline, thoughts on Vince McMahon and more.

On his time with the House of Truth: “You know, he (Truth Martini) just makes the smart decisions for his guys. Matt Taven has it much better than I did, because there’s no one else in the House of Truth right now. He definitely the top guy; whereas when I was in the House of Truth, I was just kind of there to make sure Roddy (Roderick Strong) was the World Champ and when he got the title, make sure he kept the TV Title when he was the TV Champ. But now, I’m on my own and I get to make my own thoughts and that’s what I plan on doing. I plan on becoming the next Ring of Honor World Champion.”

On fellow World Title contender Jay Lethal: “I think Jay Lethal is definitely a top contender, anywhere he goes; he’s definitely proven it as of late in Ring of Honor. I did beat him for the number one contendership, so if he gets a title match before I do, there’s definitely an issue there and Nigel then is going to have to answer to me. But the good thing about Ring of Honor is no matter who is champion, there is always a ton of contenders; everybody is so good in that locker room that anyone can end up being the champion, anyone can end up being a challenger for the title. So, that’s something really good about Ring of Honor.”

On what makes SCUM different from other groups in Ring of Honor: “You know, the House of Truth, we were there to be a functional unit together; to make sure we were the best in Ring of Honor. We respected what Ring of Honor stood for and the wrestling that Ring of Honor has, we just wanted to be the best that was there. SCUM’s got a different mindset; they don’t care for Ring of Honor, they don’t want Ring of Honor to survive. They just want SCUM to be the end-all, be-all and they want Ring of Honor out of business. So there’s a big difference there, we looked at it as we just wanted to be the best there and they looked at it as they don’t want it there anymore.”

On whether he would have preferred to have faced Steen for the title: “Naw, you know. The Ring of Honor Title, at least to me and I think to a lot of people, means so much and that’s what really matters, becoming the Ring of Honor World Champion. It doesn’t matter who is the champion or anything, all that matters is that one day, Michael Elgin is going to be Ring of Honor World Champion. So, no matters who holds that belt, you know they are at the top of their game and beaten somebody at the top of their game and that’s a hard path and I’m all about the challenge.”
