Bret Hart: HHH Is Overrated & Never Had Great Match

Bret was recently interviewed and shared his candid feelings on Triple H. Here is what he had to say…

“I have a certain amount of respect for Triple H. I remember when he first came in, I remember commenting on stuff that he did. Because I’d usually give wrestlers my thoughts and try to help them on stuff… Triple H has always been a good wrestler. But great? What is he now, a 1,000 time world champion? How great really is he?

“I look at [CM] Punk… I can look at certain wrestlers and I go, this guy is an innovator. Like a Rey Mysterio, who’s done stuff that no one has ever thought of before. Punk has done stuff — really unique moves and you go, ‘gee I’ve never seen anything like that before.’ They innovate all the time, and they create new sequences and moves and things.

“Then you look at someone like Triple H. When I look at him — he’s always had a good look as far as his body went — he always had a pretty muscular physique. But you look at someone like Hunter and you wonder, what has he really done. One move that he ever created that nobody ever saw before or some highspots or an idea for a match… He’s mostly a guy that just showed up and they made him. He’s always been a decent wrestler — I would consider him a good wrestler and pretty talented. But great? I don’t know, I don’t think so.

“What has he ever done that’s great? He’s never had a great match, I don’t think ever. Whenever I look at Triple H’s matches, including the last one he had with Undertaker — and I don’t really mean it as a knock — but I told myself before I watched it because I’m trying to like Paul now these days, that I want to see him do something to make me think he’s got greatness in him.

“Before Triple H wrestled Undertaker last year, I remember watching it and going, ‘I can picture the whole match in my head, I can tell you exactly what this match is going to be like and how it’s going to go. And I remember watching it and it went exactly how I predicted it… I thought it was mediocre at best, maybe a 4 out of 10, or 3 out of 10.

“I think Paul is a little overrated… overrated for being great. I can sit here and tell you that there was one match that he ever had with anybody that I thought was great. It’s kind of a shame, he should have a great match somewhere.

erm… im almost embarrassed for Bret now.. i think its really sad that he feels it necessary to constantly remind ppl how great he was and how not great everyone else was/is…

i dont consider HHH to be the best ever, but he has had some damn great matches thru the years with the likes of Austin, Shawn, Taker, Rock, Angle, Beniot, Y2J, Batista.. just to name a few…

i like you bret… but as for your statements in this interview… im calling BULLSHIT!

Wow Goldberg really did rattle your brain unfortunately for Bretthe only thing he is remembered for is the Montreal screw job and selling out to WCW and then he was gone Bret screwed bret

  • asdf

HHH won the King of the Ring, won the Royal Rumble, and held the World Heavyweight Championship belt for almost a whole year. Think about it, Bret.

    Bret Hart who?

I’m kinda torn because I like Bret Hart and am a fan of his but I also somewhat like HHH, But I agree with Bret on this to a degree because HHH was never a great wrestler. He could Sell and was badass with promos but wrestle? No, he was never a wrestler…an entertainer? Yes. A Wrestler? Not in the slightest. its John Cena. Cena is a great entertainer but as a wrestler he is incredibly weak. I do question how he had become world champion so many times because honestly he wasn’t that great to be world champion. But I do agree he had some really amazing matches with HBK, Undertaker, Rock, Austin, Mick Foley but again he’s always been a good entertainer. Think about it. WWE: is world wrestling entertainment, pretty much a place which is all about entertainment and wrestling is an after thought. WWF: world wrestling federation was about wrestling first and foremost and entertainment mostly last. If you don’t believe me just look back at the old WWF tapes when Bret was world champion for the first time and some of the matches he had was all about technical ability and submissions…When was the last time somebody in WWE did a sleeper hold, Reverse Chin lock or attack a body part instead of just beating a guy senseless? WWE is entertaining but it’s not WWF.

I respect Bret Hart but he really needs to shut up.

  • scottie

He’s pretty much on the nose.

Look at what he said….Take the last match with Undertaker…compare that with the ups and downs and on the edge of your seat matches like the ones with Shawn Micheals…Triple H really hasn’t had one of those in recent memory.

Can HHH even construct one of those like Rock vs Austin? I get what Bret is saying here.

Bret hart. Your retired. Your aging and so is Paul. But Paul still tries to keep in shape and will still perform as a part-timer. Your throwing down burgers when i look at your body. Keep your comments to yourself. Ignorant bastard

Who is Brett to doubt HHH like El Dandy? If HHH wasnt great the audience would have let him know. They would have booed him or remained silent and bored. Hes always got great loud reactions and had more memorable matches than Brett.

The audience went wild for hulk hogan and he was never a great wrestler.

But I think that triple h’s style and the way he executes his moves and makes his moves look like a million bucks makes him a great wrestler.

And I never saw Bret do a move that he invented but HHH is the only one I ever saw do a pedigree.

I think they are both great.

      It’s Bret you clown!

I’m a fan of Bret, however he is his own biggest fan. I always take all he says with a grain of salt, he does have a case of sour grapes.

Yeah I never did believe he had fully gotten over his bias against HHH and this proves it. He’s had great matches with HBK, Rock, Austin, Taker (and if you didn’t think the HIAC with Taker last year was great, you’re a fucking moron, period), Angle, Benoit, hell the list goes on and on, he even had some great matches with Shelton Benjamin and Taka Michinoku. Bret just sees what he wants to, he’s always hated HHH because of his closeness with Shawn back when they were butting heads, and it clearly clouded his judgment.

He’s like jeff jarrett a big mouth not a bad wrestler but does need someone to make him look good or he’s just the same tired old shit since 02′. I join the best there is on that case. A good gimmick dosen’t make you a good wrestler overall. He was awesome in 99 to 01 only.
